Wellness Coaching … the Next Level of Specialized Health Promotion

Sooo, I am feeling more than sheepish when I look and see that my last post was …

…um…

…written in 2011.  Please accept my apologies!  Seems like I have been caught up in the insanity of life and my blog (and creative writing!) has taken a hit.

Anyway, I thought I would introduce to you what has been keeping me on my toes.  I decided to take the schooling plunge again and have started the process of becoming a certified Wellness Coach.  I am doing this through the Wellcoach organization, based in the US, and have found it to be an excellent learning experience.  First and foremost, I have decided I am rather old-school through my discovery that the world of education has drastically changed to a virtual on-line world, and how much I like the original way of textbooks and overhead projectors, ha ha ha.  Anyway, I am pushing past this and making out just fine!

I the reason I decided to pursue this certification is that I really wanted to have the opportunity to take health promotion to the next level and work directly with individuals.  As much as I thoroughly love facilitating, and expressing the “teacher genes” I have from my incredible parents, I have always wanted to take things further.  There was an amazing article posted this past January in Benefits Canada outlining what this type of coaching is all about, which I have linked for you here:

Although in this article, the authors speak to the benefits of “Lifestyle health coaching” mostly in terms of corporate buy-in, these benefits hold true for anyone wanting assistance in achieving their optimal well-being.  It is a very interesting concept and definitely worth the quick read!

Hopefully soon, I will be able to say that I am a certified Wellness Coach and can put into practice everything I have been learning.  Oh, I’m not going to lie, although access to an on-line textbook was part of my tuition fees, I still went and purchased the hard copy.  There is something so satisfying about lovingly destroying a text book with a high-lighter, the same type of  purple pen I have been using since high school, and dog-earring the pages :)  Now that is how I learn!
